Travel Insurance for Medical Emergencies

Traveling can be unpredictable. That’s why having Allianz Travel Insurance ensures you’re protected against the unexpected, no matter where in the world you are.

We will reimburse reasonable and customary medical or dental expenses if:

  • You suffer a sudden, unexpected illness or injury while abroad (including pandemic diseases like COVID-19).
  • You require urgent dental care, such as a dental injury, infection, lost filling, or broken teeth.
  • You are hospitalised as an inpatient, and we arrange payments up to your policy limit.

Important: This is secondary cover—claims should first go through any existing health insurance. If you’re not covered in the destination, submit your claim directly to us.

What is Not Covered?

While our travel medical emergency insurance offers extensive protection, there are certain situations and treatments that fall outside the scope of cover:

  • Non-emergency or routine medical care (e.g. general check-ups, vaccinations, long-term treatment)
  • Medical attention received in South Africa
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless specifically included in your policy)
  • Cosmetic or elective procedures not medically necessary
  • Eyewear, hearing aids, dentures, and damage or loss related to them
  • Rehabilitation or palliative care, unless required to stabilise a critical condition
  • Allergy treatments, unless the reaction is life-threatening
  • Experimental or unproven treatments

Always review your policy document for full terms, exclusions, and conditions before travelling.

We’ll coordinate and pay for emergency transport to the nearest appropriate hospital if local facilities are inadequate. This includes:
  • Ground or air ambulance services
  • Ongoing support and decisions made by our global medical assistance team
  • Provision of a medical escort when required

All transportation must be authorised and arranged by Allianz for full cover to apply.

Once you're stable enough to travel, we’ll arrange and pay for your return to:

  • Your home address
  • A hospital in South Africa for further care
  • A location of your choice within South Africa, if medically appropriate

Transport may include a medical escort and/or special seating arrangements, if medically necessary.

If you're hospitalised for more than 72 hours or your condition is life-threatening, we will arrange and pay for one close relative or friend to travel to your bedside and cover round-trip airfare in economy class.
If you're hospitalised for more than 24 hours or pass away while travelling, we will arrange and pay for the safe return of minor children or dependents, and also cover travel for a responsible adult to accompany them, if necessary.
In the unfortunate event of death abroad, we will arrange and pay for the transport of your remains to a funeral home in South Africa, or reimburse the costs of a local burial or cremation (up to the repatriation cost).
If you're reported missing or trapped in a physical emergency, we will pay for professional search and rescue operations up to the policy’s maximum benefit limit.

Making a claim with Allianz Travel is simple and hassle-free. Follow these steps to get started:

  • Notify Us As Soon As Possible : Once you’ve contacted emergency care, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team so we can guide you and, where necessary, arrange transportation or hospital payments.
  • Gather Your Documents: Keep copies of medical reports, receipts, and any correspondence related to your treatment or emergency.
  • Submit Your Claim Online: Visit our website to complete the claims form and upload your supporting documents.

Tip: If you have other health insurance, submit your claim there first. Allianz Travel provides secondary cover.

A medical emergency abroad can cost you more than just your health—it can lead to overwhelming bills, logistical nightmares, and stress for you and your loved ones.

Here’s why having cover matters:

  • Medical care abroad can be extremely expensive, especially in countries like the USA or parts of Europe.
  • Private hospitals may require upfront payment, even in emergencies.
  • Evacuation or repatriation costs can run into hundreds of thousands of rands.
  • Government support is limited—you’re often on your own when emergencies strike overseas.
  • Schengen Visa Ready
  • All our travel insurance policies meet and exceed Schengen visa requirements for emergency medical coverage.
  • We provide emergency medical expense limits exceeding EUR 30,000, ensuring full compliance for South Africans applying for a Schengen visa.
  • Ideal for travel to Europe where visa approval requires proof of adequate medical insurance.
  • With Allianz Travel’s medical emergency cover, you’re not just insured—you’re protected, supported, and guided every step of the way.
  • Peace of mind for you and your family, knowing you're covered in worst-case scenarios.

Schengen Visa Ready

All our travel insurance policies meet or exceed Schengen visa requirements for emergency medical coverage. We provide emergency medical expense limits exceeding EUR 30,000, ensuring full compliance for South Africans applying for a Schengen visa. This is ideal for travel to Europe where visa approval requires proof of adequate medical insurance.
