Unlike many other insurance policies, our Travel Insurance policies include a trip cancellation benefit of up to R 90,000, depending on the policy you choose. This means that if you need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, you won’t be left out of pocket.

Trip cancellation coverage provides financial protection if you need to cancel your trip before departure due to specific, unforeseen circumstances beyond your control. The following events are covered under this benefit:

  • Medical Emergencies: If you or an immediate family member experiences a serious illness, injury, or death before departure, resulting in the necessity to cancel your trip. A medical certificate from a qualified physician confirming the severity of the condition and its impact on travel is required.
  • Unexpected Death: If the insured, a travel companion, or an immediate family member passes away before the trip begins, leading to the cancellation of the journey.
  • Jury Duty or Subpoena: If you are unexpectedly summoned for jury duty or required to appear in court as a witness (excluding work-related legal matters), and this obligation conflicts with your travel dates.
  • Redundancy or Job Loss:If you or a traveling companion (who is also an insured person) is unexpectedly made redundant or terminated by their employer—provided the termination is not due to misconduct or voluntary resignation—and has been continuously employed with the same company for at least 12 months prior to the cancellation. Our policy does not cover job loss of non-insured spouses.
  • Natural Disasters and Severe Weather Conditions: If a natural disaster (such as an earthquake, flood, or hurricane) occurs at your destination or departure location, making travel impossible or unsafe as confirmed by local authorities.
  • Serious Damage to Your Home: If your primary residence suffers significant damage due to fire, flood, or burglary, making it uninhabitable and requiring your immediate presence.

It is important to understand the limitations of the trip cancellation benefit. The following circumstances are not covered under this policy:

  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: Any medical condition that existed before purchasing the policy and was known to the insured, unless specifically covered under a pre-existing condition waiver.
  • Change of Mind or Personal Preferences: Deciding not to travel for personal reasons, such as fear of flying, a change in vacation plans, or dissatisfaction with travel arrangements.
  • Failure to Obtain Travel Documents: Cancellations due to an expired, lost, or incorrectly issued passport, visa, or other travel documents.
  • Pregnancy-Related Cancellations: Unless complications arise that are deemed medically necessary by a physician and were not foreseen at the time of purchasing the policy.
  • Work Commitments: If you or an insured traveling companion is required to work unexpectedly (excluding redundancy as mentioned under covered events). However, the policy provides coverage, provided:
  1. You are an employee needing employer approval for time off;
  2. Your leave was approved when you booked the trip; and
  3. Your employer later revoked the approved leave.
  • Acts of War, Terrorism, or Civil Unrest: Any trip cancellations resulting from war (declared or undeclared), terrorism, or political instability unless specified otherwise in the policy.
  • Failure to Comply with Airline or Travel Provider Policies: If the airline or provider refuses boarding due to policy violations, such as missing a connecting flight due to your own delay.

If you have any questions regarding specific scenarios, please refer to the official Terms & Conditions or contact our customer support team for clarification. For the most comprehensive protection, we recommend reviewing your policy in detail and understanding the documentation required in case of a claim.
