Sometimes, we all need a little break from everyday life. Luckily for us, South Africa has an abundance of actives and mini breaks in just a few short hours from the major cities
In this article we tell you about our favourite short breaks around the country.
Short breaks from Cape Town
At just a 1hr and 45min drive, Greyton is a great spot for a short break outside of Cape Town.
Dubbed as ‘South Africa’s little England’, Greyton has gorgeous oak-lined lanes with tiny country cottages. Grab yourself a bike or set off on foot and take in some of the wonderful views of the Sonderend Mountains.
Franschhoek is one of the oldest towns in the republic of South Africa. It is also one of the most popular weekend getaways in South Africa at just over a 1-hour drive from Cape Town.
You can find some of the top restaurants in the country here, as well as being known as the ‘winelands gourmet capital.’ So if you like your food, wine, and stunning accommodation, Franschhoek is the place for you.
2 hours north east of Cape Town is Cederberg, the perfect place for a lover of hiking and climbing in the great outdoors. The Cederberg is renowned for its high quality rock-climbing routes.
There is also an observatory for viewing the perfect night skies.
Short breaks from Johannesburg
Parys is the Afrikaans translation of Paris, and the town even has its own Eiffel Tower, all be it a very small one!
This town boasts art galleries, antiques, coffee shops and lively pubs – lots to keep you entertained.
Not far from Parys is also the oldest largest verified meteorite impact crater on earth, Vredefort Dome (pictured). It is estimated to be around 2.023 billion years old!
Just a 2-hour 30minute drive north west of Jo’burg will take you to the small historical farming hamlet of Groot Marico. It is most famous thanks to the writings of Herman Charles Bosman, a man widely regarded as South Arica’s greatest short-story writer.
2 hours north of Jo’burg brings you to the ancient stunning rugged peaks of Waterberg!
Feel far away from the city and normal life and enjoy the local game reserve, be it from a distance with a camera, on horse back or from a bubble bath (seriously!)
Short breaks from Durban
Just over a 1-hour drive from Durban will bring you to the coastal town of Hibberdene!
This town is popular with swimmers, divers and snorkelers heading to the offshore reefs. It is also a lovely place to relax on one of the many beaches.
Florence Farm, Swartberg
For something a little bit different, head a little over 3 hours outside of Durban to Swartberg. Experience a little of the farm life here by doing activities such as hay making and sheep shearing and feeding.
The farm also has lots of ex-polo ponies to take you on one of the many horse-riding trails.
With a country as large and diverse as our lovely South Africa, we couldn’t possibly fit everything there is to do in one article. If you have taken a short break in the country recently, we would love to hear more about it.
